Hi, I'm Flavia!

Welcome to my portfolio!

About

I’m a recent Civil Engineering graduate at the University of Toronto passionate about giving back to the community. As someone originally from São Paulo, Brazil, I’ve been exposed to extremely different socio-economic conditions and environments. I decided to join civil engineering to help minimize this gap and positively impact future generations.

My Portfolio

This portfolio portrays my most memorable projects from my time as an undergraduate student in Engineering at the University of Toronto. This portfolio is a broad representation of my interests in Civil Engineering, being that I haven’t selected a specific field of work and am still open to potential career paths. In order to complete these projects I utilized my skills developed through my engineering studies and extracurricular activities. I refined analytical and interpersonal skills that I believe will be essential to my future in the workplace.

The first entry of my portfolio is my most recent and potentially most memorable project in university. My Multidisciplinary Capstone project involved working in a team of 4 to help reduce the stunting and contamination transmission in indigenous children of Guatemala. The Chorti indigenous people of Guatemala currently live in homes with soil flooring that is prone to contamination from outdoors. The Chorti children are routinely exposed to fecal contamination from playing outdoors with the vegetation, animals and garbage which is transferred with them in the household. With the help of our client, Action Against Hunger, the team performed a field visit to Guatemala in November of 2018 and was able to develop key design objectives and constraints. In April of 2019, the team presented a design solution in a design showcase along with other 20 projects in various fields of engineering. We were able to deliver a design prototype of an earthen floor, along with strength and water tests, and a cost analysis of the design. Our design strived to help the Chorti families by reducing the contact of soil contamination to children while minimizing the costs for our client Action Against Hunger.

The second entry of my portfolio is about my experience during my Professional Experience Year (PEY) as an intern in Unilever Rexdale. I worked in Unilever for 13 months as a Quality Assurance Intern in their Rexdale manufacturing facility in a team of 8. I helped support daily quality assurance through different stages of the manufacturing process and support focused improvement cases. I supported QA investigations through data collection, data analysis, report writing and facilitation of meetings. My most significant accomplishment in my time at Unilever was supporting external audits accreditations such as the FSSC22000, McDonalds, A&W, Kosher and Halal certifications. Working in such a dynamic environment as a manufacturing facility, pushed me to learn how to act quickly and be proactive while maintaining a healthy and professional relationship with my coworkers.

The third entry of this portfolio is my Municipal Engineering Design Project. Our team of 4 worked as consulting engineers to design the municipal services (water distribution, sanitary, and storm design) for the development of a 14 hectare area and a small community. In this project we had to use our analytical skills to draw system layouts, select pipe sizes, write technical reports and use various computer softwares. This was a long and laborious assignment that needed the collaboration of the entire team to ensure the design’s success under strict municipal guidelines.

The fourth entry of this portfolio is my Management of Construction Project. In this project the team visited different constructions sites in downtown Toronto to observe and study construction practices and techniques. The final report had to reflect the various aspects of construction work including safety, equipment used, design process and city challenges. This project showcases the importance of organization and planning tasks ahead of time in order to avoid delays and conflicts.

As a whole my portfolio displays my skills and qualities as an Engineering student. Through a variety of complex projects and assignments I have developed problem solving, communication and teamwork skills. I am confident that this skill set will help me excel in any future endeavors in my professional career.
