The following entries are some of the projects and experiences I did throughout my undergrad studies in engineering.

Natural Earthen Flooring Design to Reduce Feco-Oral Transmission in Chorti Households

In Guatemala, it is estimated that 60% of children living in the indigenous Chorti communities suffer from stunting. Along with malnutrition, one of the main causes of child stunting is their contact with poor water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) conditions. Therefore, the household environment in which children are raised heavily influences their growth and cognitive development. The Chorti people currently live in homes with soil flooring that is prone to contamination accumulation from outdoors. The children are highly exposed to fecal contamination from playing outdoors with the vegetation, animals and garbage. Our client, Action Against Hunger, gave our team the task of helping the Chorti families reduce stunting rates amongst their children. Our team performed a field visit in November of 2018 to see the Chorti communities and personally meet the main user of our design solution. The main observations were:

Most houses did not have a water network. They need to fetch water at the closest source and store it at a water tank.

Most houses did not have a toilet or latrine. They defecated out in the open in the vegetation nearby.

All communities were far away from the cities and located in the mountains. Communities and houses were distant from each other. A pick up truck is the only way to arrive at the communities
After compiling all observations and data from the field visit, our team developed key design objectives:

Reduce exposure and transmission of soil contamination to children
-
Maximize cleanability and durability
-
Minimize costs for AAH and Chorti families

Design alternatives and concepts were developed through the use of TRIZ, SCAMPER and 4-3-5 methods which were then evaluated using a Pugh Table. The best design alternatives identified were the Earthen Floor, Bamboo Flooring and a Palm Fibre Reinforced Concrete floor. Each alternative was suggested to satisfy the unique nature of the Chorti households, and to employ the resources locally available. The final design chosen was the Earthen Floor as it better satisfied the clients and users objectives and constraints. ​

In April of 2019, our team presented our final design in a showcase amongst other 22 engineering multidisciplinary teams at the University of Toronto. We were able to deliver a poster, a design prototype, a cost analysis and an implementation trial plan. Our final report will be examined by Action Against Hunger who will decide whether the our design will be actually be implemented. This team project showcased my engineering judgement and design skills. I utilized problem solving analysis design evaluation methods and demonstrated communication skills through written reports. This project also developed my interpersonal and teamwork skills to help solve a real world problem.

2.0 Quality Assurance Internship at Unilever
Class: Professional Year Experience (PEY)

As part of the engineering program at the University of Toronto, students are allowed to take a year off to pursue an internship in the field of his/her choosing, and return to school after. My internship role was of Quality Assurance Intern at a Unilever manufacturing facility and it took place over 13 months. I worked in a team of 8 and in a highly dynamic manufacturing environment. I helped support daily quality assurance through different stages of manufacturing processes and support focused improvement cases. I supported QA investigations through data collection, data analysis, report writing and facilitation of meetings. My most significant accomplishment in my time at Unilever was supporting external audits accreditations such as the FSSC22000, McDonalds, A&W, Kosher and Halal certifications, as well as acquiring an Internal Auditor certification from the Unilever QA North American headquarters. Working in such a dynamic environment as a manufacturing facility, pushed me to learn how to act quickly and be proactive while maintaining a healthy and professional relationship with my coworkers.

3.0 Municipal Engineering Project
Class: CIV340 - Municipal Engineering
Date: April 11, 2017
The Municipal Engineering Project required my team to work as consulting engineers to design the municipal services for a small community. The design comprised of 3 technical reports proposing a Water Distribution, Sanitary Sewer, and a Storm Drainage System. The team was provided with General Plan drawings along with engineering design criteria and standards. My contribution to the project proposal included: cost estimation, pipe size selection, calculation of tributary areas and design of flow velocities.
This team project showcased my knowledge of municipal systems and engineering judgment as I followed strict guidelines and constraints. During this process, I utilized problem solving analysis, computer softwares and my calculation abilities to find the water demand and meet the design criteria. I also demonstrated communication skills through the written report by summarizing the results and process in a concise manner.

4.0 Management of Construction Project
Class: CIV280 - Management of Construction
Date: Novermber 13, 2015
The Management of Construction Project involved visiting multiple construction sites around downtown Toronto in order to study construction process and techniques. This project provided myself and my team with a better understanding of the various aspects of construction planning in urban environments. We were able to analyze construction sites and relate it to what was taught in class. During the course of the project, we practiced our knowledge of construction terms and talked to on site supervisors about the current stage and progress of the construction. At the end of the semester, we produced a report based on the observations made, including our thoughts, recommendations and conclusions.
As part of the team, my job was to compare and contrast the challenges observed in each site and formulate improvements that could be made. Through this project I analyzed the different planning strategies made by each site, and how they executed tasks in order to minimize delays and unexpected events. I further developed my knowledge of construction work including safety, types of equipment, design process and city challenges.
